“Starting therapy can feel like a big step, but you don’t have to get it ‘right.’ There’s no perfect way to begin—just showing up is enough, and we’ll work out the rest together.”

What I Wish More People Knew About Their Therapist

Thinking about starting therapy but feeling unsure? You’re not alone.

Starting therapy can feel like a big step, and all the uncertainty—wondering if the therapist will be the right fit, not knowing what to expect—can make it even harder.

Over the years, I’ve seen how uncertainty can hold people back, especially if it’s their first time seeking therapy or if they need a specialist but feel unsure where to start.

I know this because I’ve been there, too. Finding the right therapist can feel daunting. Taking that first step isn’t always easy. But I’ve learned that understanding how therapists think can ease some of the uncertainty. While I can’t speak for everyone, I believe what I’m about to share might give you a better sense of what to expect.

We don’t always know right away if we can help you.

Even though therapists meet new clients all the time, the first session carries some uncertainty for us too. It’s not about judging you—it’s about understanding your needs and seeing if we’re the right fit. If you feel comfortable continuing after the first session, therapy is more likely to work.

We care about giving you the best support—but we have limitations.

Therapists train to provide the best care, but we don’t have expertise in everything. If you need a different type of support (for example, working with a highly specialised issue), I’ll recommend options that might work better for you.

We know you have choices, and we support that.

I always encourage people to meet different therapists to find the best fit. That also means sometimes clients choose someone else. While that can be disappointing, I see it as a positive step—because agency, choice, and freedom are essential qualities in therapy. You deserve to work with someone you truly feel comfortable with, and that choice is entirely yours to make.

If you’ve been considering starting therapy, you can book a first consultation with me to see if we’re the right fit. In this first meeting, we’ll explore whether we’re the right fit and how I can support you. This is a paid session, but if you’d rather start with a short chat, you’re welcome to contact me for a free 15-minute call. No pressure—just a chance to see if working together feels right for you.
